Cornus Mas

Not only in Italy, but all over the world there is a " rediscovery of the berries". There is a re-evaluation for health and consequently production of species with small fruits, generally more suitable for processing than for fresh consumption, but extremely rich in properties, vitamins, antioxidants and anthocyanins. Cornus Mas (corniolo in Italian) is a very beautiful shrub for its flowering and it produces also delicious red berries.
Tree: Cornus mas is a deciduous shrub growing to 5 m as a medium rate, not so vigorous. Not frost tender.
Editor: Unpatented.
Flowering: Very beautiful bloom, yellow colored. Very early blossoming period. Self-impollinating.
Maturation: Summertime (July in Italy).
Fruit: The Cornus mas fruit is a small berry, round slightly elongated. Corniolo appears in early summer. Once it reaches the ripening time it is a beautiful dark red or cherry color.
Taste: Fruit (raw, dried or used in jam) is juicy, with a nice acid flavour. Cornus Mas berries are rather astringent, specially not totally when not fully ripe.
